Elizabeth was invited to present as part of the Power to Protect Webinar Series in 2025. Power to Protect is an important kaupapa, protecting our mokopuna from the lasting effects of shaken baby syndrome / abusive head trauma - "Tau Ai Te Ira / My life is my right, you have the power to protect."
This kaupapa is lead by Dr Patrick Kelly and Patrick Salmon who are both consistent and inspirational leaders in this space. They presented in the opening webinar of the series, outlining the vision, background and strategy of this important programme, setting the scene for a useful series for the clinicians who attended.
Elizabeth's kōrero was called "Mātauranga Māori gifts us solutions for our pēpi: Actionable strategies for whanau" which introduced Tūpuna Parenting ways, making references to Dr Kelly and Patrick's first webinar and showing how tūpuna ways could inspire whānau to follow the science without sharing about the science.
Compared to her usual presentation, Elizabeth made sure to put special emphasis on mātauranga and examples that support whānau with crying pēpi. For example, supporting whānau to identify their kāinga (village) who they can call on and encouraging whānau to reframe how they view their pepi as a wee person with a voice with mana to be protected and respected.
This was a special and insightful rōpu who joined the Zoom (over 50 attendees) with thoughtful questions in the Q&A.
